The man behind the crow mask leads the Outers, common-born mages who hate the nobility that looks down on them. He casts magic through a strange cube-shaped artifact and strikes at Hebrion's aristocrats without mercy. In the future Desir remembers, the Outers' war helped push the world towards ruin, which makes Crow Mask one of the first enemies the returned hero has to understand, not just defeat.

Appearance

Nobody in the story knows what Crow Mask actually looks like, and that is the design: a dark, beaked crow mask hides his whole face, worn with dark clothing that gives away nothing about the man underneath. The effect in person is unsettling, part plague doctor, part executioner. His cube artifact is the other half of the image, a strange geometric object that floats and turns in his hands when he casts, unlike any wand or staff the academy teaches about.

Personality

Crow Mask is bitter, theatrical and genuinely dangerous, a man who has turned a lifetime of being looked down on into a cause. He does not hide his contempt for nobles or his pleasure in humbling them, and he recruits from people who share the wound: common-born mages the system used and threw away. That grievance is real, which is what makes him effective and hard to dismiss. Desir, who watched where the Outers' war led last time, cannot afford to treat him as a simple villain with a mask. He has to understand him, because last time nobody did, and the world paid for it.

From the shadows he fronts the organisation in the field while its true leadership stays hidden, striking at Hebrion's aristocracy and seizing what the cause needs. In the future Desir remembers, the Outers' campaign helped tear the world apart from inside while the Shadow Worlds tore it from outside. So Crow Mask is one of the first enemies the returned hero studies rather than simply fights, because defeating the mask was never the hard part. Defeating the anger wearing it is.
