Quick Answer

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is a standalone ten-episode anime from CD Projekt Red and Studio TRIGGER, released on Netflix on 20 October 2026. Set in Night City in 2078, it follows four new characters (Weak Kingsley, D, Talia Yang and Roman Carax) rather than David and Lucy from the first series, which you do not need to have seen.

About Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 returns to Night City with a brand-new crew chasing money, fame and survival, and this time the city itself, in 2078, is the only returning character that matters. The standalone ten-episode story weaves together four lives: Weak Kingsley, a washed-up edgerunner once called 'the King', now living without the chrome that made him a legend; D, a Snake Nation netrunner hunting the killer who wiped out his clan; Talia Yang, a corpo-born fighter hardened inside the Maelstrom gang; and Roman Carax, a young filmmaker who still believes a camera can capture the truth. An Arasaka data chip carrying an AI called Capri drags all four into the same deadly job. Like the first Edgerunners, it is a story about what the city takes from the people who try to beat it, family, obsession and legacy. Studio TRIGGER returns with director Kai Ikarashi, a reimagined look, Tsuneo Imahori's score and songs written for the series. All ten episodes arrived on Netflix on 20 October 2026.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is a ONA anime from 2026, first released in Fall 2026. It belongs to the Sci-Fi and Action genres and is listed as a completed series. The summary above is written by the AnimeYug team in our own words.

Story & Plot

Night City, 2078. Four strangers move through the same city on separate tracks. Weak Kingsley was once the King of the edgerunners; stripped of his chrome, he now survives on reputation and stubbornness. Talia Yang, raised in corporate towers and remade by the Maelstrom gang, takes the jobs nobody else will touch. Across the city, the nomad netrunner D follows the trail of the killer who destroyed his clan, a trail that leads straight into corporate secrets. And Roman Carax, a young cinephile with an old film camera, follows all of them, determined to record real stories in a city that prefers braindance fiction.

When their paths collide around an Arasaka experiment, each of them has to choose what matters more: revenge, survival, the footage, or each other. Edgerunners 2 is a standalone story, no knowledge of David Martinez's tale is needed, but it shares the first series' heartbeat: in Night City, legends are made quickly and buried faster, and the only real question is what you leave behind.

Why Watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2

  • A completely new crew: a washed-up legend, a revenge-driven netrunner, a corpo fighter and a filmmaker.
  • Studio TRIGGER's reimagined animation style keeps Night City neon, violent and beautiful.
  • Standalone story, ten episodes, no homework, one complete Night City tragedy.
  • Score by Trigun composer Tsuneo Imahori, plus original songs by Rico Nasty and more.
  • The opening theme is The Cure's '10:15 Saturday Night', a punk classic over Night City.

Who Is It For?

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is rated TV-MA on Netflix, strictly adults only. Expect graphic violence, nudity, strong language and drug themes throughout, in line with the first series and the Cyberpunk 2077 game.

Manga & Source Material

Edgerunners 2 is an original anime story, not an adaptation of a manga or novel. It is set in the world of CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 game, which itself grows out of Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk tabletop role-playing game.

  • An original story created for animation by showrunner Bartosz Sztybor of CD Projekt Red
  • Set in Night City in 2078, around a year after the events of the Cyberpunk 2077 game
  • Co-produced by CD Projekt Red and Japanese studio TRIGGER
  • The wider Cyberpunk universe was created by Mike Pondsmith for his tabletop role-playing games
  • A standalone sequel: it shares the city and themes of the 2022 series, not its plot
  • Cyberpunk 2077 received an Edgerunners 2 content update (version 2.5) alongside the anime in October 2026
