Yhwach

Yhwach

From Bleach

Quick Answer

Yhwach is a supporting character in Bleach, the king of the Quincies and father of their power, a thousand-year-old ruler who returns to wage the Thousand-Year Blood War on the Soul Society. He is voiced by Takayuki Sugo in Japanese and Richard Epcar in English.

About Yhwach

Yhwach is the king of the Quincies and the father of their power, a thousand-year-old ruler who returns to wage war on the Soul Society. Calm, patient and utterly merciless, he sees the future itself through his power, The Almighty, and treats even his own loyal Sternritter as pieces to spend. His goal is nothing less than remaking the worlds and ending death altogether, forever.

Appearance

Yhwach is a tall, broad man with long black hair, a heavy moustache and beard, and sharp red-brown eyes. He wears the white uniform of the Wandenreich with a long dark cloak fastened by a medallion, and carries a broad sword. Age sits on him like authority rather than frailty: he looks like a king from an older, harsher century, and when his power The Almighty awakens, multiple pupils split open in his eyes.

Personality

Yhwach doesn't shout. He doesn't gloat, threaten or lose his temper. He tells you what's going to happen, in the tone of a father explaining the weather, and then it happens. To the Quincy he's their king and the source of their power, practically a god, and he treats lives accordingly, including his own soldiers' lives, as things to be spent on the goal. A thousand years of waiting sits behind that calm, plus a grievance against the Soul Society older than most of its captains. He wants a world rebuilt to his design, and he's in no hurry at all.

Background & Story

Yhwach was born long ago as a miraculous child who could share pieces of his soul with others, healing and empowering them, and reclaiming those pieces, with interest, when they died. Every Quincy descends from his blood. A thousand years before the story he marched on the Soul Society and was defeated by Captain-Commander Yamamoto, losing his powers and his kingdom. Quincy legend said the sealed king would regain his heartbeat after 900 years, his mind after 90, and his strength after 9. Hidden in the shadows of the Seireitei itself, the Wandenreich waited out the prophecy, and when Yhwach opened his eyes again, he declared war on the Soul Society with an army of Quincy the Soul Reapers never knew existed.

Powers & Abilities

  • The Almighty: His Schrift, eyes that see every possible future at once, and the power to choose the future that arrives, making him nearly impossible to surprise or kill.
  • Soul distribution: Yhwach grants pieces of his soul to empower others, the source of every Quincy's Schrift, and reclaims their power when they die.
  • Auswahlen: A pillar of light that strips power from Quincies he judges unnecessary and redistributes it to those he chooses, killing the ones it leaves behind.

Key Relationships

  • Jugram Haschwalth: His right hand and 'other half', who carries The Almighty at night while Yhwach sleeps.
  • Uryu Ishida: The young Quincy he named his successor, a choice that unsettles even his own court.
  • Ichigo Kurosaki: The war's central obstacle: a boy whose mixed blood makes him, in Yhwach's words, one of his own.
