Jugram Haschwalth is Yhwach's right hand and the grandmaster of the Sternritter, a poised blond swordsman known as His Majesty's other half. By night he even carries Yhwach's foresight while the king sleeps. His power, The Balance, turns misfortune back on his enemies, and his loyalty hides an old, painful friendship with Bazz-B that the war forces him to bury under duty and silence.

Appearance

Jugram is a tall, slender man with long, straight blond hair falling past his shoulders and cool green eyes. He wears the white Sternritter uniform with a long white cloak and a fur-trimmed mantle as grandmaster, and carries a slim sword, and, when his power calls for it, a shield. His whole bearing is courtly and still, the opposite of the loud soldiers around him: a knight who looks like he belongs in a chapel rather than a war.

Personality

Jugram judges everything by one standard: is it balanced? His power works that way and, honestly, so does he. As Yhwach's right hand he's all ceremony and control, the perfect grandmaster, loyal in public down to the last syllable. The private version is messier. He grew up with Bazz-B, the two of them swearing as boys that they'd kill Yhwach together someday. Jugram chose the king instead. He doesn't talk about it. He just carries on being polite, being ruthless, being exactly what his office requires, with that old choice sitting underneath every order he gives.

Background & Story

Jugram grew up in poverty under an abusive uncle, in a village where his only friend was Bazz-B, a loud noble boy with the talent Jugram lacked, Jugram was a rare Quincy who could not form weapons of spirit energy at all, only give power away. When Yhwach's army burned their forest and came recruiting, Jugram was recognised for what he was: a Quincy of the king's own type, the first in a thousand years. Yhwach made him his right hand. He rose to grandmaster of the Sternritter, led the Wandenreich's forces in the war, and by night took on Yhwach's own foresight while the king slept, His Majesty's other half in fact as well as title.

Powers & Abilities

• The Balance: His Schrift redirects misfortune: harm and bad luck that befall him are turned back on his opponent, keeping the scales even, at the enemy's expense.
• Freund Schild: The shield that partners his power, absorbing misfortune aimed at him so The Balance can repay it with interest.
• The Almighty (by night): While Yhwach sleeps, Jugram carries the king's future-seeing eyes, though he admits his grip on the power is weaker than his master's.

• Yhwach: His king and the man he gave his life to, a loyalty chosen over friendship, freedom and eventually everything else.
• Uryu Ishida: The named successor whose motives Jugram alone seems to see through; the two circle each other through the final war.
