Thorfinn
From Vinland Saga
Thorfinn is the main character of Vinland Saga, the son of the legendary warrior Thors, who spends his youth fighting in the warband of Askeladd, the man who killed his father, while waiting for an honourable duel. In Season 2 he rebuilds his life as a slave farmer and swears off violence. He is voiced by Yūto Uemura in Japanese and Aleks Le in English (Netflix dub).
About Thorfinn
Thorfinn is the son of Thors, once the mightiest warrior of the Jomsvikings. After watching Askeladd murder his father, he spends his youth as a blade for hire inside the killer's own warband, living only for a revenge duel. Losing that purpose breaks him, and slowly, through slavery, farming and friendship, he rebuilds himself into a man who swears he has no enemies and dreams of a peaceful Vinland.
Appearance
Thorfinn is short and wiry for a Viking warrior, with shaggy light-brown hair, sharp eyes and a face that hardens early from years of battle. As a teenager in Askeladd's band he carries two short daggers and wears rough travelling clothes and a cloak suited to constant marching and raiding. Years of slavery change him visibly: his hair grows long and unkempt, his frame fills out from farm labour, and his expression softens from a permanent scowl into something quieter and sadder. Scars on his hands and body mark the life he is trying to leave behind.
Personality
Young Thorfinn is single-minded to the point of self-destruction: cold, impatient and alive only on the battlefield, because revenge is the only goal he has. He is brave and fiercely proud, refusing to kill Askeladd in his sleep because his father's honour demands a fair duel. Losing his purpose leaves him empty and silent for years. On Ketil's farm, friendship and honest work slowly thaw him, he becomes gentle, patient and deeply reflective, a man who apologises to the families of people he killed and who would rather take a hundred punches than raise a weapon again.
Background & Story
Thorfinn grew up in a small Icelandic village, listening to the explorer Leif Erikson's stories of Vinland, a warm land across the sea with no war and no slaves. His father Thors, once the Jomsvikings' strongest captain, had faked his death to live in peace, but the Jomsvikings found him and forced him back to war. Six-year-old Thorfinn stowed away on the ship and watched Askeladd's mercenaries trap and kill his father, who traded his own life for his crew. The boy swore revenge and followed Askeladd's band as they joined the Danish invasion of England, doing the killer's dirty work for years in exchange for promised duels he could never win. By his late teens Thorfinn was a hardened warrior defined entirely by hatred, and when events in England took his revenge away from him, he had nothing left at all. Season 2 finds him sold as a slave to Ketil's farm in Denmark, where the story of how he rebuilds himself begins.
Powers & Abilities
- Twin Daggers: Thorfinn fights with two short blades, using speed and close-quarters angles rather than strength, and can throw a dagger with deadly accuracy.
- Speed and Agility: Small and exceptionally fast, he scales walls, slips through guards and dodges blows from far larger warriors, surviving duels with men like Thorkell by movement alone.
- Battlefield Experience: Raised in a warband from childhood, he reads fights instinctively and stays functional under wounds and exhaustion that would stop ordinary soldiers.
Key Relationships
- Thors: His father, whose death drives the first half of his life and whose teaching, that no one has enemies, becomes the compass of the second half.
- Askeladd: His father's killer and his commander for over a decade; the enemy Thorfinn hates most and, unwillingly, the man who shapes him more than anyone.
- Einar: Fellow slave on Ketil's farm and his first true friend, the brother he chooses, who pulls him back to life when he has given up.
- Canute: The prince he once tried to kill; as king, Canute becomes his mirror, another young man trying to remake a violent world, by opposite means.
- Leif Erikson: The old explorer who told him about Vinland as a child and spends years searching for the lost boy to bring him home.
- Ylva: His older sister in Iceland, who held the family together while he was lost to war.
