Olmar is Ketil's younger son, a pampered young man desperate to be seen as a warrior despite being hopeless with a sword. Jealous of his brother Thorgil and terrified of looking weak, he is manipulated into a foolish duel that sparks disaster for the whole farm. His story is a sharp lesson in the series' theme: the hunger for glory ruins men who have nothing to prove.
Appearance
Olmar is a soft, youthful young man with none of his brother's hardness, fine clothes, an uncertain posture and a face that shows every insecurity. He carries a sword he can barely use and imitates the swagger of Canute's retainers, whom he idolises. The contrast between the warrior he performs and the frightened boy underneath is the first thing everyone around him notices, and the thing his manipulators use.
Personality
Olmar is vain, insecure and desperate for respect, raised in a rich house where his father's legend and his brother's real ability leave him nothing to be. He is not evil, he is weak, and his weakness takes the form of pride: he cannot bear to be laughed at, cannot admit fear, and reaches for a warrior's honour he has not earned. His story is the series' warning about what the glory culture does to boys who were never suited to it.
Background & Story
Olmar grew up as the younger son on Ketil's farm, watching retainers and soldiers pass through and dreaming of joining King Canute's guard. Given a chance to prove himself before the king's men, he is goaded and flattered into a confrontation he cannot win, humiliating himself, and in his panic he kills a man he should never have fought. That single act hands Canute's court the legal pretext it wants to move against his father's farm, and Olmar must watch the world he endangered come apart around him.
