Arnheid's village was destroyed in war and she was sold into slavery; her husband Gardar, a warrior, vanished and was presumed dead. Bought by Ketil, she became his personal attendant on the farm in Denmark, fed and housed better than the field slaves, but owned, and expected to serve the master in every way. There she befriends Thorfinn and Einar, sharing small kindnesses, mending, food, conversation, that help all three endure. When the past she thought was gone returns to the farm in the form of her husband, Arnheid is forced into the story's most painful choice between safety and freedom.
