Canute
From Vinland Saga
Canute is a main character of Vinland Saga, the younger Danish prince who begins the story as a timid, sheltered boy and hardens into a king determined to build a paradise on Earth by any means necessary. He becomes Thorfinn's great mirror and rival. He is voiced by Kensho Ono in Japanese and Griffin Burns in English (Netflix dub).
About Canute
Prince Canute begins as a sheltered, soft-spoken boy hidden behind his bodyguard Ragnar, mocked as a princess. His guardian's death shatters his faith and awakens a cold resolve: to seize the crown and build a paradise on Earth for the people God abandoned, by any means necessary. As king he becomes Thorfinn's mirror: another young man reshaping the world, but through power instead of peace.
Appearance
Canute is slim and fine-featured, with long blond hair and soft, downcast eyes that lead the Vikings around him to mock him as a princess. He dresses in fine princely clothes and is rarely seen without his giant bodyguard Ragnar at his side. After his awakening he changes visibly: his hair is cut shorter, a scar marks his cheek, his gaze turns cold and level, and as king he carries himself with a still, intimidating authority that fills a hall without raising his voice.
Personality
Young Canute is devout, gentle and almost pathologically dependent, unable to speak for himself or act without Ragnar. The violent loss of that protection breaks his faith in a loving God and rebuilds him as something colder: a brilliant, ruthless idealist who concludes that humans must seize paradise themselves since heaven will not provide it. As king he is patient, calculating and utterly unsentimental, willing to poison, starve and confiscate for his vision, yet he genuinely grieves the cost, which is what makes him frightening rather than simply cruel.
Background & Story
Canute is the second son of King Sweyn Forkbeard, sent with the Danish army invading England largely so his father can be rid of a weak heir. Sheltered by his retainer Ragnar and mocked by the warriors around him, he is captured by Thorkell and then taken under Askeladd's protection. The deaths and betrayals around him in England force a sudden transformation: Canute resolves to take the Danish crown himself and build a kingdom where the suffering and abandoned can live in peace. Season 2 shows the result, a young king methodically gathering power, whose hunger for land eventually brings his army to the gates of Ketil's farm, and face to face with the changed Thorfinn.
