Naofumi is the Shield Hero of The Rising of the Shield Hero: a college student summoned to Melromarc, then robbed and framed by its princess within days. Unable to attack with his legendary shield, he survives by cooking, crafting, trading and raising others to fight beside him. Bitter and sharp-tongued, he protects people anyway, that contradiction is his whole story.

Appearance

Naofumi is a young man of twenty with short, messy dark hair and sharp green eyes that spend the early story narrowed in suspicion. He wears practical, layered travelling clothes and armour bought cheap and upgraded piece by piece, with the Legendary Shield always on his arm, a small green-and-silver shield that changes shape as it absorbs materials. His merchant's eye shows in the details: a cloak for the road, cooking gear, crafting tools. He looks less like a summoned hero than a travelling trader who expects to be cheated, which is exactly what he became to survive.

Personality

Betrayal rebuilt Naofumi. The friendly otaku who arrived in Melromarc became bitter, sarcastic and slow to trust anyone. He assumes the worst of strangers and says so to their faces. But the kindness underneath never actually died: he feeds people, heals them, protects villages that spit at his name and treats his companions like family. His real arc is learning, person by person, which few people deserve his trust, and letting Raphtalia and Filo pull him back toward the man he was. He is a hero who does not believe in heroes, protecting a world that has given him every reason to walk away.

Background & Story

Naofumi Iwatani was a twenty-year-old university student and cheerful otaku in Japan who found a picture book, 'The Record of the Four Holy Weapons', in a library, and woke in the kingdom of Melromarc as one of four summoned Cardinal Heroes. The others received a sword, spear and bow. Naofumi received the shield, a weapon that cannot attack, in a kingdom that already despised the Shield Hero. Within days his only companion, the princess Myne, robbed him and framed him for a crime he did not commit, leaving him penniless and hated. Refusing to break, he bought the freedom of a sick demi-human girl, Raphtalia, treated her wounds and raised her as his sword; a monster egg hatched into Filo, his second companion. Together, the hated hero and his small party start from zero, trading, cooking, crafting and protecting the villages the celebrated heroes ignore, levelling in the shadow of the coming Waves that all four heroes were summoned to stop.

• Legendary Shield, Shield Forms: The shield absorbs materials and transforms into new forms (for defence, support, crafting and travel) building an arsenal of shields instead of a single weapon.

• Wrath Shield, Curse Series: Fed by his rage after the betrayal, the curse-series Wrath Shield grants burning offensive power at a terrible cost to Naofumi and anyone near him.
