Motoyasu Kitamura

About Motoyasu Kitamura

Motoyasu is the Spear Hero, a charming university student who believes every woman and doubts every man, which made him the perfect tool for Myne's betrayal of Naofumi. Foolish and flirtatious, he is not truly evil, just thoughtless, until the story breaks him down to nothing and he rebuilds himself in the strangest way imaginable.

Appearance

Motoyasu is a tall, handsome young man with spiky blond hair and an easy, confident smile, usually in light armour with the Legendary Spear in hand, the picture of a storybook hero, which is exactly the problem. He dresses and poses like the lead of a romance game, surrounds himself with an all-female party and treats most rooms as audiences. In his university life in Japan he dressed the same confidence more cheaply. Naofumi's first impression of him (charming, thoughtless, dangerous) is the correct one, and the story spends a long time proving it.

Personality

Motoyasu is cheerful, gallant and catastrophically gullible where women are concerned. He means well in the abstract, he wants to help people and be admired for it, but he never examines a claim, a motive or himself, and that laziness makes him the perfect weapon for anyone willing to smile at him. Malty uses him like a tool for months. What saves him from contempt, as a character, is that his stupidity is innocent rather than cruel: when reality finally breaks through, the fall is total, because there was never anything underneath the performance except a boy who wanted to be loved.

Background & Story

Motoyasu Kitamura was a university student in his Japan whose easy way with women ended, in his own world, in a stabbing born of his own two-timing, a detail he prefers to forget. Summoned as the Spear Hero, he lands in a kingdom delighted to flatter him, and Princess Malty, Myne, wraps him around her finger within days. It is Motoyasu who champions her false accusation against Naofumi most loudly, because Motoyasu believes women, always, and thinks about it never. His early story is a tour of thoughtless heroism: releasing a sealed monster plant on a starving village because a pretty face asked, duelling Naofumi for Raphtalia's 'freedom' she never asked for. He is not evil. He is what heroism becomes without a single honest thought.

Powers & Abilities

• Legendary Spear: Motoyasu's spear is a Legendary Weapon that changes form as it absorbs materials, unlocking new heads, skills and elemental attacks.
• Spear Skills: His techniques include whirling multi-target strikes and powerful thrust skills, fitting his aggressive, showy fighting style.

Key Relationships

• Myne Sophia: The princess who wraps him around her finger and aims him at Naofumi. Motoyasu believes her every word, every time, at everyone's expense.
• Naofumi Iwatani: The fellow hero Motoyasu persecutes on Myne's word, their duel over Raphtalia is the emblem of everything wrong with Motoyasu's heroism.
• Filo: The filorial girl whose existence later rewires Motoyasu entirely, his obsession with her is the strangest chapter of his strange story.
