Lucy Steel

About Lucy Steel

Lucy Steel is the fourteen-year-old wife of race promoter Steven Steel, far sharper and braver than the men around her assume. Curious about the race's hidden purpose, she begins her own investigation into the holy corpse and the President's interest in it, a path that turns a bystander into one of the most important players in Steel Ball Run.

Appearance

Lucy is a small, fair-haired girl with long blonde hair and a gentle, doll-like face that makes every adult in the story underestimate her. She dresses in the fine clothes of a promoter's wife, dresses, ribbons and neat coats of the 1890s, which only sharpen the contrast when she is crawling through air vents and stealing state secrets.

Personality

Lucy is kind, devout and quietly fearless. She married Steven to save her family from debt and treats the strange marriage with more maturity than most adults around her. Her curiosity is her weapon: told to stay safe and decorative, she instead asks what the President really wants with her husband's race, and then goes and finds out, alone, again and again.

Background & Story

Lucy Pendleton was fourteen when her family's debts led her into marriage with Steven Steel, the much older showman planning the Steel Ball Run; Steven, for his part, treats her more as a daughter and partner than a wife, and she helped shape the race idea itself. Travelling with the race staff, Lucy overhears fragments of a plot involving the President and a holy corpse scattered along the route. Determined to protect Steven, she begins her own secret investigation, and becomes one of the most important players in the entire race.
