Kurapika

About Kurapika

Kurapika is the last living member of the Kurta Clan, whose scarlet eyes were stolen by the Phantom Troupe. Calm, clever and fiercely driven, he becomes a Hunter to recover his clan's eyes and punish those responsible. His Nen chains are built for that mission, growing stronger through strict vows. Behind his quiet manner sits deep grief and loyalty to his friends.

Appearance

Kurapika has medium-length blond hair, dark eyes that blaze bright scarlet when his emotions surge, and a fine-featured, youthful face often mistaken at first glance. He is slim and of average height at 171 cm, favouring a blue tabard-style outfit with white trim over plain clothes. Five chains hang from the fingers of his right hand, his conjured weapon, worn openly. A single earring with a red ornament marks his Kurta heritage.

Personality

Kurapika is intelligent, composed and fiercely principled, with a scholar's mind and a judge's sense of right and wrong. Among strangers he is courteous and distant; among his small circle of friends he is warm, dry-humoured and protective. But grief and rage sit directly under the calm: any mention of the Phantom Troupe can turn his eyes scarlet and his judgement to ice. Kurapika knows revenge is consuming his life, chain by chain, and the tragedy is that he continues anyway, because the dead have no one else.

Background & Story

Kurapika was born to the Kurta Clan, a hidden people whose eyes turn a priceless scarlet when emotional, a trait that made them targets. He left the clan's forest home after passing its trials to seek a doctor for his friend, and while he was gone the Phantom Troupe massacred the entire clan and harvested their eyes for the black market. Kurapika, the only survivor, dedicated his life to two goals: recovering every pair of his people's eyes, and destroying the Troupe. He takes the Hunter Exam for the licence's access and information, befriending Gon's group, then builds his Nen around his vow, chains that grow mighty through the strength of his resolve and the price he is willing to pay.

Powers & Abilities

• Conjured Chains: Kurapika conjures five specialised chains from his right hand, each with its own power, from a dowsing chain that detects lies to a healing chain.
• Chain Jail: Kurapika's middle-finger chain wraps a Phantom Troupe member and seals their Nen completely, usable only on Troupe members, on pain of Kurapika's death.
• Scarlet Eyes, Emperor Time: When Kurapika's eyes turn scarlet he becomes a Specialist, gaining full mastery of every Nen category at the cost of his own lifespan.
• Judgment Chain: A chain Kurapika sets around a target's heart with conditions he dictates; breaking them means death, a vow he first placed on himself.

Key Relationships

• Killua Zoldyck: A friend whose warnings about the cost of vengeance Kurapika hears but cannot follow.
• Leorio Paradinight: His closest ally among the Exam group, the friend who checks in on him when he disappears into his mission.
• Chrollo Lucilfer: The leader of the Phantom Troupe and the object of Kurapika's life's purpose, the man who ordered his clan's massacre.
