Chrollo Lucilfer

About Chrollo Lucilfer

Chrollo Lucilfer is the calm, soft-spoken leader of the Phantom Troupe, the gang of thieves known as the Spider. He founded the Troupe with friends from Meteor City and leads it with quiet loyalty, believing the group matters more than any single member, including himself. His Nen ability steals other people's powers and stores them in a book, making him one of the most dangerous men alive.

Appearance

Chrollo is a young man of average height with black hair worn slicked back (or falling loose over his forehead when unstyled), grey eyes and a serene, unreadable face. A cross-shaped tattoo marks the centre of his forehead, and he wears ornate cross earrings. His usual outfit is a long dark coat with a fur-trimmed collar over bare skin, giving him the air of a priest or a mourner. When he dresses as an ordinary citizen he vanishes into the crowd completely, which is its own kind of statement.

Personality

Chrollo is soft-spoken, philosophical and eerily calm, a leader who tells his Troupe that the Spider's survival matters more than his own life, the head can be replaced, the legs cannot. He reads constantly, thinks in metaphors and seems genuinely untroubled by morality, ordering massacres with the same tone he uses for poetry. Yet his loyalty to his fellow founders from Meteor City is real, and his grief for a fallen member is the one crack in the stillness. He does not know who he is outside the Troupe, and seems aware of it.

Background & Story

Chrollo grew up in Meteor City, a dumping ground whose residents the world treats as nonexistent, and there he gathered the friends who would become the Phantom Troupe, a gang founded, in part, to protect the city and chase the outside world that discarded them. As the Troupe's leader, Chrollo made it the most feared criminal group alive, Class-A bounties whose deeds include the massacre of the Kurta Clan for their Scarlet Eyes. He crosses Gon's story in Yorknew City, where the Troupe gathers to rob the underworld auctions and Kurapika's chains close around their leader. Chrollo's calm in captivity, and his people's loyalty to him, reveal how completely the Spider revolves around its head.

Powers & Abilities

• Skill Hunter (Bandit's Secret): Chrollo conjures a book that stores Nen abilities he steals from their owners, usable by opening the book to the right page while holding it in his right hand.
• Theft Conditions: To steal an ability Chrollo must witness it, ask its owner about it and receive an answer, and touch the victim's hand to his book's cover, all within one hour.
• Indoor Fish: One of his stolen abilities conjures fish that swim through the air of enclosed rooms and devour victims, who remain alive and unaware while being eaten.

Key Relationships

• Kurapika: The chain user hunting his Troupe for the Kurta massacre, the enemy who comes closest to destroying the Spider.
• Hisoka Morow: A false member whose entire purpose in joining was to fight Chrollo, a fact Chrollo treats with patient amusement.
• Gon Freecss: A boy Chrollo interrogates in Yorknew and regards with genuine curiosity about his refusal to fear death.
