Gren

About Gren

A saxophonist at the Blue Crow bar on Callisto, once a soldier in the Titan War alongside Vicious, who betrayed him to prison. The experiments and drugs of his imprisonment changed his body, and he lives quietly in the frozen town, playing music and waiting for one thing: to confront Vicious and learn why. His two episodes, Jupiter Jazz, are among the most praised in the series, and his ending under the stars is unforgettable.

Appearance

Gren is a striking figure with long dark hair, fine features and a gentle, melancholy manner, usually dressed warmly against Callisto's cold. His body carries the mark of his past: medical experiments and drugs during his imprisonment changed him, giving him a form that is, in his own words, both and neither, something the series treats with unusual tenderness. He is most often seen with his saxophone at the Blue Crow bar, where his playing carries everything he does not say out loud.

Personality

Gren is soft-spoken, kind and quietly funny, a man who offers shelter to strangers in a dangerous town and apologises for troubles that are not his fault. There is no bitterness in his daily life, only patience: he has organised his whole existence around one unanswered question for the friend who betrayed him. He is brave without bravado and honest about what was done to him, and his calm acceptance of his own fate makes his two episodes among the most quietly devastating in the series.

Background & Story

Gren fought in the Titan War, where he served alongside Vicious and came to trust him completely, even keeping a music box Vicious gave him. After the war, Vicious framed him as a spy, and Gren was thrown into a military prison where experimental drugs and treatments permanently altered his body. Released at last, he settled in the frozen, all-male town of Rester House on Callisto, playing saxophone at the Blue Crow and waiting. When Faye Valentine stumbles into his bar and Spike's hunt for Vicious crosses his path, Gren finally sees his chance to confront the past, and to learn the truth he has waited years to hear.
