Ein
From Cowboy Bebop
Ein is a supporting character in Cowboy Bebop, a Pembroke Welsh corgi whose brain was enhanced in a laboratory, making him a 'data dog' far smarter than any normal animal. The Bebop crew mostly treats him as a pet, which suits Ein fine. His barks and sounds are voiced by Kōichi Yamadera in Japanese.
About Ein
A Pembroke Welsh corgi whose brain was enhanced in a laboratory, making him a 'data dog' of intelligence far beyond any animal, a fact the crew mostly ignores. Ein rarely does anything dramatic: he naps, rides in shopping carts and occasionally solves problems the humans miss, like leading them to clues or operating machinery. Stolen, rescued and adopted by Jet and then Ed, Ein is the Bebop's quietest and possibly smartest crew member.
Appearance
Ein looks exactly like an ordinary, adorable Pembroke Welsh corgi: short legs, long body, upright ears and orange-and-white fur, usually wearing a simple collar. Nothing about him advertises that he is a piece of advanced biotechnology. He trots, naps and rides in shopping carts like any dog, and his expressions stay mild and unbothered even in the middle of shootouts, the perfect disguise for possibly the smartest mind on the Bebop.
Personality
Ein is calm, patient and quietly superior. He observes the crew's chaos with the tolerance of a creature who knows he could help but sees no reason to hurry. He shows his intelligence in small, easily missed ways, understanding conversations, operating simple machinery, leading people toward clues, then happily goes back to being a dog. His strongest bond is with Ed, the one human whose wild energy matches his wavelength, and he is utterly loyal to the crew that took him in.
Background & Story
Ein began life in a research laboratory, where scientists enhanced his brain and turned him into a 'data dog', an animal with extraordinary intelligence and data-processing instincts. Valuable on the black market, he was stolen by criminals, and during a bounty hunt gone sideways he was rescued by Spike and taken in by Jet, who adopted him as the Bebop's mascot. From then on Ein simply lives aboard the ship: eating better than the humans on good days, joining Ed's adventures, and occasionally, very occasionally, saving the day in ways the crew never quite notice.
Powers & Abilities
- Enhanced Intelligence: Laboratory enhancement gave Ein intelligence far beyond any animal, he understands human speech, recognises situations and solves problems the crew misses.
- Data-Dog Instincts: Ein can interface with technology in uncanny ways, at one point hacking into a dangerous cult's systems, abilities his creators designed into him.
Key Relationships
- Edward: His closest companion, Ed is the only human who treats Ein as an equal, and the two are nearly inseparable.
- Jet Black: The man who rescued and adopted him, and who feeds him steak on the rare occasions the Bebop can afford it.
- Spike Spiegel: The bounty hunter who first carried him out of danger, and who claims to dislike dogs while never once leaving Ein behind.
