Eto Yoshimura

Eto Yoshimura

From Tokyo Ghoul

Quick Answer

Eto Yoshimura is a supporting character in Tokyo Ghoul, the bestselling novelist Sen Takatsuki in public, and in truth the natural-born one-eyed ghoul who founded Aogiri Tree and is the real One-Eyed Owl. She is Yoshimura's daughter. She is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese and Lindsay Seidel in English.

About Eto Yoshimura

Eto Yoshimura, pen name Sen Takatsuki, bestselling novelist, is the one-eyed ghoul who founded Aogiri Tree and the true One-Eyed Owl. Daughter of Yoshimura and a human journalist, she was hidden in the 24th ward and grew up to declare war on the world's order itself. Charismatic, cruel and brilliant, she writes horror novels for humans by day and plots the ghoul revolution by night.

Appearance

Eto appears in two forms: as the novelist Sen Takatsuki, a petite, playful woman with messy green hair and a mischievous, sleepy-eyed charm; and in her ghoul form, a small figure almost completely wrapped in bandages under a ragged hooded cloak, with a single ghoul eye visible. Her true kakuja form is the monstrous Owl, a hulking, feathered mass of kagune with one eye, a transformation that makes her tiny human shape feel like a costume worn by the monster, not the other way round.

Personality

Eto is playful, theatrical and terrifyingly intelligent, she treats revolutions like literature and people like characters, and her cruelty usually has an argument attached. She genuinely believes the world's order is rotten to its foundations and that ghouls will never be given a place in it, only take one. Beneath the performance is a child who was hidden underground so the world would not kill her, and her warmth, rare, sudden and real, is reserved for the few who see that child rather than the Owl.

Background & Story

Eto is the child of the ghoul Yoshimura and the human journalist Ukina, a natural one-eyed ghoul, so rare she should barely exist. Hidden as a baby in the lawless 24th ward to protect her from the organisation hunting her parents, she survived a childhood of violence and grew into the ward's terror and, eventually, the founder of Aogiri Tree. In public she hides behind fame as Sen Takatsuki, the bestselling horror novelist, writing books humans love while building an army to tear down the order that made her childhood necessary.

Powers & Abilities

  • Ukaku Kakuja: As a kakuja, a ghoul who has grown monstrously strong through cannibalism, Eto's kagune forms the huge, feathered Owl body, one of the most destructive forms in the series.
  • Natural One-Eyed Ghoul: Born half-human and half-ghoul, Eto combines a ghoul's full strength and regeneration with the ability to eat human food and live among humans undetected.
  • Master Manipulator: Through Aogiri, her novels and her public persona, Eto shapes politics, media and war at once, her words are as strategic as her kagune.

Key Relationships

  • Yoshimura: Her father, who hid her in the 24th ward as a baby and built Anteiku out of guilt and hope; their love is real and their choices opposite.
  • Ken Kaneki: The artificial one-eyed ghoul she watches with fascination, a kindred product of the same unjust world, and a piece she keeps moving on her board.
  • Kisho Arima: The CCG's Reaper, with whom Eto shares one of the series' deepest and strangest understandings across the war's divide.

Quick Answers

Is Sen Takatsuki really Eto?

Yes, Sen Takatsuki is Eto's human identity. The bestselling horror novelist and the One-Eyed Owl are the same person, a fact she eventually reveals to the world herself.

Who voices Eto?

Maaya Sakamoto voices her in Japanese and Lindsay Seidel voices her in English.

How is Eto related to Yoshimura?

Eto is Yoshimura's daughter by the human journalist Ukina, which makes her a natural-born one-eyed ghoul, unlike Kaneki, who was made one by surgery.
