Kureo Mado

Kureo Mado

From Tokyo Ghoul

Quick Answer

Kureo Mado is a supporting character in Tokyo Ghoul, a veteran CCG investigator infamous for his mania for quinques, the weapons made from the kagune of ghouls he has killed. His hunt for the Fueguchi family shows what the long war does to the humans who fight it. He is voiced by Tōru Ōkawa in Japanese and Kenny Green in English.

About Kureo Mado

Kureo Mado is a veteran investigator infamous for his mania for quinques, weapons made from the kagune of ghouls he has killed. Unhinged in battle and obsessive in the lab, he hunts the Fueguchi family and meets his end against Touka and Hinami. His madness has roots: a wife killed by the One-Eyed Owl. Mado shows what the war does to the humans who fight it longest.

Appearance

Mado is a gaunt, wiry man with wild white hair, sunken, gleaming eyes and a grin that appears at exactly the wrong moments. He dresses in investigator's clothes gone slightly feral, coat askew, quinque case always in hand, and his body language in the field is a hunter's: crouched, darting, delighted. In the lab he is the same man at lower volume, bent lovingly over the weapons he builds from the ghouls he kills.

Personality

Mado is brilliant, unhinged and, in his own way, grief-stricken rather than simply sadistic. He loves quinques the way artists love their medium, speaks to his weapons, and treats ghouls as material rather than people, which lets him do with a smile what other investigators do with duty. His intuition about ghoul psychology is the best in the bureau, and his scenes with Amon show the mentor buried in the mania: he genuinely wants his partner to understand ghouls, because understanding them is how you kill them.

Background & Story

Mado was once a respected investigator whose wife was killed by the One-Eyed Owl, a loss that quietly broke something in him. His grief channelled into obsession: quinques, the weapons made from dead ghouls' kagune, became his passion, and hunting the ghouls who provide them his therapy. Partnered with the young Amon, he leads the hunt for the Fueguchi family in the 20th ward, reading ghoul behaviour with an expert's intuition and pursuing mother and daughter with a connoisseur's patience that makes him one of the first series' most disturbing human antagonists.

Powers & Abilities

  • Quinque Expertise: Mado is the CCG's foremost quinque enthusiast and a master of using them, he reads a quinque's properties instantly and wields experimental weapons other investigators cannot handle.
  • Ghoul Intuition: His almost supernatural instinct for ghoul behaviour, how they think, hide and protect each other, makes him the bureau's most effective hunter of fugitive ghouls.

Key Relationships

  • Kotaro Amon: His last partner, whom Mado mentors in his own warped way, the young investigator inherits both his skills and his questions.
  • Akira Mado: His daughter, who builds her career and her hatred on his memory.
  • Hinami Fueguchi: The young ghoul whose family Mado hunts, his cruelty to them is the first series' clearest portrait of the CCG's dark side.
  • Touka Kirishima: The Rabbit, one of the ghouls who ends Mado's hunt, and the name his daughter grows up cursing.
