Coco
From Witch Hat Atelier
Coco is the main character of Witch Hat Atelier, a tailor's daughter who was told magic was only for the born, then learned its real secret by accident: magic is drawn. After a spell turns her mother to stone, she becomes Qifrey's apprentice to find a way to undo it. She is voiced by Rena Motomura in Japanese and Anjali Kunapaneni in English.
About Coco
Coco is a cheerful tailor's daughter who has loved magic since a masked witch gave her a picture book and ink as a small child. Told that only the born can be witches, she discovers the truth by accident, magic is drawn, and in one careless night casts a spell that turns her mother to stone. As Qifrey's apprentice, she studies to undo it.
Appearance
Coco is a young girl with golden-green hair in a chin-length bob and bright golden eyes that light up at anything magical. Before joining the atelier she wore simple embroidered dresses from her mother's tailor shop. As an apprentice she wears the blue robes of Qifrey's atelier with a pointed cap, and usually has a pen and ink close at hand, ready to draw a seal at a moment's notice.
Personality
Coco is bright, cheerful and endlessly curious, with a child's open wonder at spells most witches take for granted. She is practical and quick-thinking, often solving problems with straight lines and simple shapes where trained witches overthink. Guilt over her mother drives her to work harder than anyone, but she rarely stays discouraged for long, and her kindness makes friends of people the witch world had written off.
Background & Story
Coco grew up in a small village of non-magical outsiders, helping her mother in their tailor shop. As a small child she met a masked witch at a festival who gave her a picture book of spells and magical ink, and she never stopped dreaming of magic, even though everyone said only those born as witches could use it. Years later, when the witch Qifrey visits her village, Coco secretly watches him work and realises the truth: spells are drawn in ink. Copying a spell from her picture book in secret, she accidentally casts a forbidden spell that turns her mother to stone. By law her memory should be erased, but Qifrey takes her in as his apprentice instead, and she begins studying drawn magic in earnest, hoping one day to find the spell that will free her mother.
Powers & Abilities
- Drawn seal magic: Like all witches in her world, Coco casts magic by drawing seals, a sign, a keystone and surrounding runes, in magical ink; the shape she draws decides what the spell does.
- Straight-line seals: Coco's natural strength is drawing clean straight lines, which she turns into simple, practical spells that often surprise her better-trained classmates.
Key Relationships
- Qifrey: Her teacher, who took her in when the law said her memory should be erased, and who guides her search for a way to save her mother.
- Agott Arklaum: A fellow apprentice and her roommate, at first a hostile rival who resents an outsider skipping the rules, slowly becoming something closer.
- Tetia: The first fellow apprentice to befriend her at the atelier, whose cheerfulness makes the witch world feel welcoming.
- Richeh: A quiet fellow apprentice whose stubborn love of her own small magic Coco comes to understand and defend.
- Iguin: The masked Brimmed Cap witch who gave her the picture book as a child, the smiling shadow behind her whole story.
