Story & Plot

In the Meiji era, when Japan is changing fast, the Kirigaya family's daughter Satoko has been raised in luxury, but her heart condition means she is not expected to live long, and her family treats her as a burden to be married off. When she is kidnapped, the assassin Shinpei Goto comes for her life.

Desperate, Satoko proposes a fake marriage: her wealth and name in exchange for her life. Shinpei accepts, and the two begin a dangerous double life, playing at being newlyweds in public while hiding knives, secrets and growing feelings in private. Every step brings them closer to the people who want Satoko gone, and to a question neither of them expected: what if this marriage stops feeling fake?

Around the couple, the era itself is a character: a Japan of arranged marriages, family honour and quiet violence, where a sickly daughter is treated as a problem to be solved and forgotten. Satoko's bargain with Shinpei is her first real act of rebellion, and, to her own surprise, the beginning of the first honest relationship of her life.
