Jubei Kirigaya is Satoko's father and the head of the Kirigaya family, a count whose house's honour matters to him above almost everything. He expects his daughter to marry well, believing a good match will secure her happiness in the short life she has left. What he does not see is how his expectations became another cage for her, or how far his gentle, obedient daughter will go to escape the future he planned.

Jubei is a dignified count of the Meiji era, dressed and groomed to the standard his rank demands. He looks like authority, because in his house he is authority, and his household runs on his word.

Personality

Jubei is proud, formal and genuinely convinced he knows what is best for his daughter. He is not a cartoon tyrant. He believes a strong marriage will protect Satoko after he is gone, and that belief is its own kind of love. What he cannot see is how those expectations became another cage, one more room in a house where his gentle daughter has been quietly suffocating for years.

Jubei Kirigaya heads one of the respected houses of Meiji Japan and has raised his daughter Satoko under the rules of that world: marry well, bring honour to the name, accept the life arranged for you. Since Satoko's heart condition gave her little time, the marriage question carries extra weight for him. A good match, in his mind, is her safety and his duty done. He has no idea how far his obedient daughter is about to go to escape the future he planned, or who she will come back with.
