Kotaro Bokuto

About Kotaro Bokuto

Kotaro Bokuto is Fukurodani's ace and captain, ranked among Japan's top five high-school spikers, with a cross shot nobody can predict. He is also gloriously moody: unstoppable when praised, useless when ignored, and carried through his slumps by Akaashi's management. His energy is contagious, he mentors Hinata in Tokyo and treats every rally like a festival. Bokuto shows what a true ace looks like at full power.

Appearance

Bokuto is powerfully built at 185.3 cm, with distinctive two-tone hair, silver-grey with black streaks, swept up like an owl's horns, and golden eyes to match. He wears Fukurodani's number 4 jersey as ace and captain. His spikes are explosive: a huge approach, a full-body swing and a ball that vanishes into the floor. His expressions are as big as his game, triumphant poses when he scores, and an almost comical slump, shoulders down and hair drooping, when his mood crashes mid-match.

Personality

Bokuto is exuberant, simple-hearted and completely transparent. He plays volleyball for the joy of the perfect spike, craves praise like fuel, and can swing from unstoppable to useless within a single set when his 'emo mode' hits. His teammates, led by Akaashi, manage his moods like weather. Yet Bokuto is no fool: he is a generous mentor who took Hinata under his wing at the Tokyo camp, teaching him feints and a new way to see the court, and his understanding of what it means to be an ace, the player who asks for the ball when it matters most, is one of the series' wisest lessons.

Background & Story

Bokuto rose to become one of the top five aces in Japanese high-school volleyball on the strength of his cross-court spike and raw power, leading Fukurodani, a Tokyo powerhouse. His weakness was never skill but mood: in slumps he would stop calling for the ball entirely. At the Tokyo training camp, Bokuto's extra practice sessions with Kuroo and Akaashi became a classroom for Karasuno's Hinata and Tsukishima, and Bokuto, teaching the younger players, began to understand his own game better. His story is about an ace learning that being the team's star means carrying the hard moments too, not just the glorious ones.

Powers & Abilities

• Cross-Court Spike: Bokuto's signature shot, a sharp cross hit from a full-power swing that lands in the far corner and is notoriously hard to read.
• Line Shot and Feints: He can switch at the last moment to a straight line shot, a cut shot or a feint, keeping blockers guessing which weapon is coming.
• Top-Five Ace Power: Ranked among Japan's five best high-school aces, Bokuto's raw hitting power and rebound control let him score even off imperfect sets.

Key Relationships

• Keiji Akaashi: His setter and vice-captain, the one person who can read Bokuto's moods and reset him mid-match.
• Shoyo Hinata: His enthusiastic student at the Tokyo camp; Bokuto sees a fellow pure-hearted spiker in Hinata.
• Tetsuro Kuroo: His fellow captain and partner in the training camp's late-night practice sessions.
• Kei Tsukishima: Bokuto's blunt honesty during camp practice helped crack the first-year's 'just a club' attitude.
