Toru Oikawa

About Toru Oikawa

Toru Oikawa is Aoba Johsai's captain and setter, the 'Great King' whose devastating jump serve and complete command of his team make him Karasuno's first great wall. Not a natural genius like Kageyama or Ushijima, Oikawa built himself through obsessive work, and his pride in that effort makes him both magnetic and bitter. He draws one hundred percent from any spiker he sets for, Haikyuu's most beloved rival.

Appearance

Oikawa is 184.3 cm with wavy brown hair, brown eyes and the polished good looks of a school celebrity, fans wait for him after matches, and he knows exactly how to smile for them. He wears Aoba Johsai's number 1 jersey as captain. On court the charm sharpens into focus: his serve toss is a ritual, and his sets are delivered with a conductor's control. The contrast is the character, the playful, flirting senior and the ruthless setter are the same person, and the second one never switches off.

Personality

Oikawa is charming, theatrical and fiercely proud, and underneath, one of the hardest workers in the series. He grew up in the shadow of geniuses: Kageyama, his own junior, and Ushijima, whom he could never beat. His answer was effort: endless practice, study of every spiker he plays with, and a setter's creed that his job is to draw out one hundred percent of whoever he sets for. He can be petty and dramatic, especially about Kageyama, but his teammates trust him completely, because nobody on the court works harder to win than their captain.

Background & Story

Oikawa was Kitagawa Daiichi's setter before Kageyama, and watching the younger boy's talent bloom drove him to overwork, even injuring his knee, until coach and teammates pulled him back. At Aoba Johsai he became captain and the most complete setter in the prefecture, yet his teams kept falling short of Shiratorizawa and nationals. When Karasuno rises in his final year, Oikawa becomes their measuring stick: the setter who knows Kageyama's weaknesses, commands his whole team like an orchestra, and pushes Karasuno to its limit in two of the series' finest matches. His story is Haikyuu's argument that talent is real, and that effort, pride and craft can stand across the net from it.
