Shinichi Izumi

Shinichi Izumi

From Parasyte: The Maxim

Quick Answer

Shinichi Izumi is the main character of Parasyte: The Maxim, an ordinary, gentle 17-year-old student whose right hand is taken over by an alien parasite he names Migi. Forced into a hidden war between humans and parasites, he has to fight to stay human. He is voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki in Japanese and Adam Gibbs in English.

About Shinichi Izumi

Shinichi Izumi is an ordinary, gentle high-school student whose life ends the night a parasite fails to reach his brain and takes his right hand instead. Forced to share his body with the creature he names Migi, he is pulled into a hidden war between humans and parasites. Shinichi grows stronger, stranger and colder, and must fight to keep his humanity.

Appearance

Shinichi starts the story as an unremarkable high-school boy: average height, slim build, brown hair and brown eyes behind large square glasses, usually in his school uniform of blazer, shirt and tie. Nothing about him suggests a fighter. That changes as his life with Migi changes him, he grows leaner and more muscular, his hair is worn spikier, the glasses disappear as his senses sharpen, and people who knew the old Shinichi start saying he looks like a different person. His right hand, of course, is the real giveaway, when it thinks nobody is looking.

Personality

Shinichi begins as a kind, timid boy who cries easily, hates violence and apologises to insects. Living with Migi, and surviving what that life brings, hardens him: he becomes calmer, colder and frighteningly decisive, and the people around him notice the change before he does. The heart of his character is the fight against that hardening. Shinichi is terrified of losing his human feelings, and his compassion, for his girlfriend, for strangers, even for enemies, is the thing he clings to as proof that the boy from before is still in there.

Background & Story

Shinichi lives a quiet life with his parents in a peaceful neighbourhood, an ordinary student with ordinary worries. One night, a tiny worm-like creature, one of many parasites arriving on Earth, tries to burrow into his ear and take over his brain while he sleeps. Blocked by his earphones, it enters his arm instead, and Shinichi traps it there with a cord before it can reach his head. The parasite matures in his right hand, keeping its own mind while Shinichi keeps his, an arrangement no parasite was meant to allow. He names it Migi, and the two are forced into an alliance: other parasites see a human brain in a shared body as an abomination, and the killings spreading quietly through Japan are about to reach Shinichi's school, his street and his home.

Powers & Abilities

  • Migi, His Right Hand: Shinichi's right hand is a living parasite that thinks, talks and fights for their shared survival, a partner, weapon and early-warning system in one.
  • Enhanced Body: After Migi's cells spread through him to save his life, Shinichi gains strength, speed, reflexes and senses far beyond a normal human, and no longer needs his glasses.
  • Parasite Awareness: Working with Migi, Shinichi can sense other parasites nearby, the skill that keeps him alive in a city where any face might not be human.

Key Relationships

  • Migi: The parasite in his right hand, captor, weapon, roommate and, slowly, something like a friend. Neither can survive without the other.
  • Satomi Murano: His girlfriend, who loves the gentle boy he was and can sense him changing into someone else, without ever learning why.
  • Ryoko Tamiya: The parasite living as his teacher, who studies him as an experiment and an anomaly rather than simply killing him, a mercy neither side fully trusts.
  • Kana Kimishima: The girl who can sense parasites and mistakes his signal for destiny, pulling herself toward his dangerous world.

Quick Answers

Why didn't Migi take over Shinichi's brain?

The parasite tried to enter through Shinichi's ear while he slept, but his earphones blocked it. It burrowed into his arm instead, and Shinichi tied off his arm with an earphone cord before it could travel to his brain, so it matured in his right hand.

How old is Shinichi Izumi?

Shinichi is 17 years old, a high-school student, when the parasites arrive.

Does Shinichi get stronger in Parasyte?

Yes. After Migi saves his life by spreading its own cells through his body, Shinichi's strength, speed, senses and healing all rise far beyond normal human limits, one reason he starts seeming less human to the people around him.

Who voices Shinichi Izumi?

Shinichi is voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki in Japanese and by Adam Gibbs in the English dub.
