Riza Hawkeye

About Riza Hawkeye

Riza Hawkeye is Mustang's lieutenant, an expert sharpshooter who serves as his aide, his guard and his conscience. Calm and disciplined, she keeps the colonel's ambitions honest and has sworn to protect him, and to stop him if he strays. She carries her father's flame alchemy research tattooed on her back, a burden she entrusted to Mustang. Her quiet devotion to her team makes her the steady centre of Mustang's unit.

Appearance

Hawkeye is a composed woman in her mid-twenties with long blonde hair usually clipped up at the back, sharp amber-brown eyes and the neat blue uniform of an Amestris officer. She carries herself with parade-ground discipline, and on duty she is almost always armed: pistols at her side and, when needed, a rifle. Beneath her uniform collar, hidden from everyone, is the great burden of her design: her father's flame alchemy research, tattooed across her back in the form of a vast transmutation array, part of it deliberately scarred over.

Personality

Calm, disciplined and quietly dry-humoured, Hawkeye is the steady centre of Mustang's unit. She does the colonel's paperwork, guards his back in battle and tells him the truth when no one else dares. Her devotion is not blind: she has sworn that if Mustang ever strays from the path he chose, she will be the one to stop him. She is gentle in private, devoted to her dog Black Hayate and kind to the Elric brothers, but in combat she is utterly professional, a soldier who made her peace with what her role requires long ago.

Background & Story

Riza is the daughter of Berthold Hawkeye, the reclusive alchemist who perfected flame alchemy and taught it to his one student, Roy Mustang. Trusting Mustang with her father's legacy, she allowed the research to be encoded in a tattoo on her back, then followed him into the military, and into the Ishval war, where she served as a sniper. What she saw there bound her to Mustang's ambition: she is now his lieutenant and aide, keeping his office, his secrets and his conscience, while quietly helping him build the network he needs to reach the top of Amestris.

• Maes Hughes: A fellow veteran of Mustang's circle whose warmth balances her reserve, his family is part of the world she is fighting to protect.
